The Smyth Campaign Kick-off Event
Thank you to all who attended my campaign kick-off event!!! It was hosted by Newport’s own, Charlie Laranjo, and held on Wednesday, July 17th at the Elks Lodge. We had a wonderful turnout of family, friends, neighbors, supporters, and residents (some that I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time).
What will it take to keep Newporters safe??
How many more citizens must lose their lives to vehicular accidents while crossing the street and cycling around our city for our elected officials to do something about it?
New Shouldn’t Always Be So Scary for Newporters
News of the City Council’s selection of our next City Manager began circulating earlier this week with a flurry of speculation and accusations.
Unfinished Work on City Charter
To the Editor: We served as two members of this year’s Charter Review Commission and want to offer the citizens of Newport a look into our thought process regarding the recommendation for revisions submitted to the City Council. We speak now as individuals.
First ever “Candidate Signature Event Tour of Newport”
Earlier this summer I put together Newport’s first ever “Candidate Signature Event Tour of Newport”. Each candidate running for office was required to obtain a certain amount of registered voter signatures for their name to appear on the November election ballot.
Campaign Season is in full swing!!
The summer is off to a great start!! The city has seen many events since the start of the summer in June. Most notably have been PRIDE, Juneteenth, the 4th of July, Folk Festival, and Jazz Festival.
Equity & Community
A healthy, equitable community is a community that offers social, physical, and mental well-being to its residents.
So, how can Newport do this? To start, it’s through healthy housing, healthy neighborhoods, healthy schools, and a healthy economy.
Charter Review & Reform
I was fortunate enough to be selected to serve on the Newport Charter Review Commission that was commissioned in December 2021, and the goal was to ensure that the city’s Charter reflected diversity, inclusion, and equity which would offer fair representation to Newport citizens.
Infrastructure & Transportation
Our infrastructure is the foundation of our city and is comprised of our roads and sidewalks, our water systems (water supply, storm water, and wastewater systems), our utilities, telecommunications, and our buildings. To say it’s vital to our quality of life is an understatement.
Quality Education
Public education is a right that ALL people should have the opportunity to receive.
What makes that quality education happen is providing the STUDENTS the resources that they need to succeed.
Attainable Housing
Attainable housing is one of the larger issues that Newport has been facing over the past few years and it’s having the greatest impact on the City’s workforce and retirement community.
Climate Change, the Environment + Resiliency
The saying “if you can see the ocean, the ocean can see you,” has never felt more appropriate for the climate change and resiliency woes facing Newport today.
Whether it’s Easton’s Beach, the Cliff Walk, road closures everytime it rains, or stormwaters swamping entire neighborhoods, our City by the Sea is on the frontline of this crisis.

Promises to put skills to work for City and lead with listening to solve complex problems
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
At my core, I’m a detail-oriented individual, who genuinely listens, and enjoys bringing people together to solve complex problems.
I’m running for Council because I am a concerned citizen and I want the best for our community.
I’m running for Council because I think my perspective and professional expertise would be an asset to how our City is run.
And I’m running for Council because I want to help build an equitable community where important decisions are made by the people and for the people of Newport.
