Campaign Season is in full swing!!
The summer is off to a great start!! The city has seen many events since the start of the summer in June. Most notably have been PRIDE, Juneteenth, the 4th of July, Folk Festival, and Jazz Festival.
And with the many events that the community has had the chance to participate in also comes the many political and civic events that have been happening. For the candidates the season started off in June and dropping off our Declaration papers to the City Hall Canvassing Office.
CANDIDATE SIGNATURE EVENT
Earlier this summer I put together Newport’s first ever “Candidate Signature Event Tour of Newport”. Each candidate running for office had to obtain a certain amount of registered voter signatures for their names to appear on the November election ballot.
There was a total of seven (7) signature events that I hosted in various local parks that were held over the course of a week and invited the community and candidates to attend.
This gave the candidates a chance to meet each other and the community a chance to meet the candidates. It also enabled the community to have an inside look at how the candidates interacted with each other as a preview to how they would work together if elected.
It was a great success and that was due in part to the community’s participation.
SMYTH CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF EVENT
Thank you to all who attended my campaign kick-off event!!!
It was hosted by Newport’s own, Charlie Laranjo, and held on Wednesday, July 17th at the Elks Lodge.
We had a wonderful turnout of family, friends, neighbors, supporters, and residents that I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time.
I’d like to thank Mayor Khamsyvoravong for attending and introducing me to the attendees. And former Mayor, John Trifero, for his support.
It was a great event and great start to the campaign season!!!
WHAT’S NEXT?
The Newport City Council Candidate Forum is set for Thursday, September 12th at Innovate Newport from 6-9PM where you’ll be able to meet the candidates and hear what they have to say about the issues in Newport.
See my Blog post “Why I’m Running For Council” to get an idea of what sets me apart from the other candidates.
